Learn how to repair and rebuild damaged brick steps from demolition through the finished repair. In this project, we remove deteriorated brick and limestone, rebuild the stairs with matching brick, install new limestone treads, and reinstall the aluminum railing system. We start by removing the damaged masonry until we reach solid material. The work area is cleaned and prepared before rebuilding the steps from the bottom up using matching brick and masonry mortar. During the rebuild, we check the stairs for level and maintain proper pitch so water drains away from the steps. After the mortar begins to set, the joints are cleaned and finished to match the existing masonry. The project is completed with new limestone treads and the aluminum railing system. In this video: brick step repair, masonry demolition and preparation, rebuilding brick stairs, limestone tread installation, mortar joint finishing, stair pitch and drainage, and railing installation. Learn how we built a custom cedar wine rack under the stairs, turning unused basement space into a functional wine storage area. In this project, we build the wine rack to fit the available space and use cedar planks to create a finished custom look. This is a great example of how unused space under a staircase can be transformed into practical storage as part of a basement renovation.
